HOW TO

CONNECTING TO THE MODEM WITH A SERIAL CONNECTION THROUGH THE USB PORT TO A PC COMPUTER. Connecting via the USB port will power the modem via the PC port and allow for programming of the modem without a current source or use of the recloser battery. To connect to the modem via USB port, unscrew the black USB port cap and connect a miniB to USB wire to the modem and a PC computer. (See, Figure below)

CONNECTING TO THE MODEM WIRELESSLY OVER THE CELLULAR NETWORK. The SCADA Cell Modem Settings Utility requires the user to enter the I.P. Address and User Port for modem. (See, Figure below). The default User Port is 20001. The static I.P. Address is assigned by the cellular carrier to which the SIM and modem are registered. Select ‘Connect’ after providing the cell modem information. When connected, ‘Status: Closed’ will change to ‘Status: Open’ Connecting over the cellular network requires the modem to be powered via battery, line load, or portable current source (e.g., Megger). If programming will take an extended amount of time, it is not recommended to wirelessly program the device through use of the recloser battery.

INTRODUCTION The Versa-Tech (VT) Single Phase Recloser senses line current and logs fault operations and manual operations. This data is usually available only for short range communication using a 900MHz or WiFi radio. The SCADA cellular modem (SCM) is a unique device that is designed for the Versa- Tech XC Recloser to support long range SCADA communication using the DNP3 protocol, thus introducing the capability to remotely monitor and control the Versa-Tech Recloser.

REQUIREMENTS 1. Versa-Tech XC 15 Pin serial port to operate. 2. Firmware version 1.08.8 or higher, bootloader 1.0 or higher, and hardware revision C. 3. When installed, the modem requires a minimum of 10A line current to be powered ON and transmit data to the SCADA system. 4. Ensure stable communication* with the Versa-Tech XC Recloser using the Versa-Tech XC Programmer prior to the installation of the SCADA Cellular Modem. 5. Ensure that the SCADA network (over LTE / I.P.) communication is active and reliable and that a cellular data plan has been established with a cellular carrier. *Refer to the Versa-Tech XC Instructions Manual TD_10_162/PSP862MAN001 for detailed installation procedure of the recloser.
